Description
"Capital Days spans more than sixty years of American history, highlighting a period of immense change in our country and its capital, much of it witnessed by Michael Shiner, a true American original who lived in Washington, D.C. [from approximately 1804 to 1880]. Born enslaved but eventually able to secure his freedom, the bold and daring Shiner, who worked at the Washington Navy Yard for many years, left behind a journal in which he recounted numerous "capital days," from the burning of the city during the War of 1812, to laying the cornerstone for the Washington Monument, to the Civil War--as well as the inauguration of eleven presidents." -- Dust jacket.
